Radford Transit and Pulaski Area Transit recently completed bus stop safety and accessibility studies. Each transit agency developed conceptual plans to improve a “top 10” list of locations throughout the City of Radford and Town of Pulaski. Conceptual plans take aim at improving visibility for both transit users and bus operators, increasing access to route information, and making the stops more user friendly for people of all abilities.
Nearly 100 bus stops were evaluated against more than 35 criteria, utilizing a prioritization tool developed uniquely for each service provider. The Regional Commission partnered with the Metropolitan Planning Organization to develop realistic visualizations and rigorously document existing conditions. Visualizations are accompanied by cost estimates and a detailed scoring matrix. Both studies enable local partners to pursue competitive funding opportunities to make capital investments. A before/after sample is shown here.
Draft plans are available here. For further information, please contact Elijah Sharp (esharp@nrvrc.org), 540-639-9313, ext. 210 or Michael Gottfredson (michaelg@nrvrc.org), 540-639-9313, ext. 205.
