The Regional Commission is seeking a creative and spatial thinker who thrives in a collaborative team environment.  The successful candidate will specialize in making technical information engaging and accessible for a variety of audiences through mapping products and contribute as a planner in the organization.  The Commission serves 13 local governments and three institutions of higher education – which requires a strong sense of customer and public service, both internal and external to the organization, is a must.  The GIS Planner will work closely with professional planning staff and local partners across a variety of specialized areas, including: public health and safety, economic development, housing, transportation, broadband deployment, outdoor recreation, and more. 

Essential functions of this position include:

• passion for creating publication quality maps and data visualizations
• coordinates GIS data in supporting planning-related project
• spatial data creation and maintenance
• researching data sources, digitizing data, and collecting geospatial information
• attends meetings and supports a variety of community engagement activities
• develops, prepares, and assists with planning studies, reports, presentations
• grant writing and administration
• assists with implementation projects
• continued personal and professional development

The Regional Commission actively seeks to employ a diverse team to serve the region and is committed to engaging all communities in the New River Valley.  This is a mid-level position that offers significant opportunities for continued professional growth.  Any combination of education equivalent to a master’s degree in Geography, Planning, Information Systems, or related discipline with at least two years of relevant experience is preferred.  Minimum requirements include a BA/BS with four years of relevant experience.  GISP and/or AICP Certification is a plus.  Starting salary range $55,000 to $72,500, DOQ.  The GIS planner is a full-time on-site staff position.
