The Commission is partnering with the New River Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization to review and update a regional freight mobility plan. In addition to examining the existing freight transportation system (rail, air, and trucking) particular emphasis is placed on developing strategies to proactively address future goods movement. Plan outcomes will include the identification of a primary freight network and specific operational enhancements.
The first step of the planning process is to document existing inbound and outbound freight movement. Freight data is readily available from a national perspective, capturing trips between one state and another. However, there is minimal data available that can be used to determine specific infrastructure or operational needs at a local level. In order to develop baseline freight conditions, Commission staff plans to meet 1-on 1 with local employers and complete a regional freight survey.
Individual meetings will be arranged through local and regional economic development departments. Utilizing national freight data, the Commission will target industries that have the highest inbound and outbound freight value and tonnage. Local businesses are encouraged to share pick-up and delivery information, and e-mail completed surveys to [email protected]. To help regional partners capture baseline information, download the survey here.
