PALS-K scores have been released for the 2016-17 academic year and the hard work and dedication of parents and educators across the New River Valley is showing. PALS, which stands for Phonological Awareness and Literacy Screening, is one of the tools used by educators to help to measure the fundamental components of a child’s literacy. Overall, the scores in the NRV improved over the past 12 months. Of particular note are the scores for the Radford City school district, whose kindergarten readiness rate now exceeds the Virginia state average! The trends for the entire region can be seen in the chart above.
Smart Beginnings NRV is working to support early childhood literacy in the New River Valley by partnering with school districts, and service providers to meet the needs of area families. The Smart Beginnings Reading Hour program engages partners throughout the New River Valley in the issue of early childhood education, giving volunteers the opportunity to read to children in need of extra support, and providing a helpful service to childcare centers throughout the region. In fact, 98% of children who complete the Smart Beginnings Reading Hour program show improvement in early childhood literacy indicators, such as enthusiasm and interest in reading.
