Since 2016, the New River Valley Regional Commission has convened the New River Watershed Roundtable as a forum for communities and organizations in the region to coordinate clean-up events and promote watershed stewardship. Highlights from the New River Watershed Roundtable in the first four months of 2017 include the following:
- February meeting to discuss expanding the New River Water Trail and the different spring clean-ups in the region.
- NRV Regional Commission awarded $7,500.00 DEQ Watershed Roundtable Support Grant for 2017. The grant will go towards funding a website for the New River Watershed Roundtable, and supporting objectives for 12 months.
- Spring Clean-up Events:
- Giles County Ramps n’ Roads-3/11 thru 3/25
- 230 people, 448 bags, 85 tires, and 18 tons on trash removed from Giles County in 11 areas
- Christiansburg Spring Cleanup-4/15
- 400 lbs. of trash collected in two hours near Crab Creek
- Montgomery County Broomin’ and Bloomin’-4/22
- 19 groups and 118 participants
- New River Symposium-5/16
- Held at the Selu Conservancy. ReNew the New presented on their expansion in 2016.
- Upcoming events:
- New River Watershed Roundtable Meeting-5/31
- To be held at the New River Valley Business Center. Will discuss next steps on the expansion of the New River Water Trail and planning for the Fall ReNew the New event.
