Smart Beginnings NRV

Smart Beginnings, NRV is a program of the New River Valley Regional Commission that works to build early childhood systems, support service providers, and serves as an information hub on issues related to kindergarten readiness. Among other things, Smart Beginnings of the NRV is engaged in data collection and analysis, drawing resources into the region, and increasing public awareness around the issue of kindergarten readiness.

Reading Hour

Reading Hour is a program of Smart Beginnings, NRV that supports children, parents, and childcare centers by providing children with the opportunity for one-on-one reading time with a compassionate adult volunteer. Studies show that children who are read to regularly have a larger vocabulary—a strong predictor of language skill and reading comprehension at ages 9-10.  Additionally, children who are read to regularly have better phonological, letter-name and sound awareness, and better success at decoding words.  Reading hour supports families and childcare centers by providing children with enhanced exposure to books and reading, helping to prepare them for kindergarten and later academic success.
