About the Regional Freight Plan

The 2018 Regional Freight Plan for Virginia’s New River Valley aims to examine the existing transportation network and proactively address future goods movement. Local stakeholders will identify internal and external factors contributing to the regional freight profile. State and Federal Transportation agencies shared the latest data, enabling the project team to create new visualizations regarding more accurate origins and destinations of freight.

Through the planning process, a regional primary freight network will be identified. The network will build on to the key strategies identified in Virginia Multimodal Freight Plan, by identifying freight-specific investment priorities for the region. Some of the region’s largest freight generators are also providing information about reliability of transport methods, workforce, and growth potential.

The combination of new data and ground-truth information will enable the 2018 Regional Freight Plan to include investment strategies and performance indicators specific to the region.
