One of the more scenic rides in the area, the route follows roads around Spruce Run Mountain. Rural, low traffic except for a one-mile section with wide shoulders on US 460. The ride begins by following Sinking Creek, so named because the creek sinks underground before reaching the New River. The route continues on SR 730 with Spruce Run Mountain on the left. After reaching the New River, the route turns left onto SR 605 following Spruce Run and passing an old mill on the right. This variation adds 17.4 miles to the ride.

Starting Point: Newport town park baseball field located on SR 42, 1.3 miles east of junction with US 460.
